Downtown Olympia is in the center of the city, just east of Capitol Lake. Its main north-south road, Capitol Way, is dotted with government buildings (including the Capitol Building and, not too far away, the Old Capitol Building) until it means the east-west drags of Fifth Avenue and Fourth Avenue, which hold mostly shops, restaurants, bars, and coffeehouses.

A fair amount of people live in downtown Olympia, both in nearby houses and in apartments (many of which are above the shops). The city council is constantly talking about "revitalizing" downtown.
